This is a story of Herefordshire rural life from 1685 until now, from the perspective of the little village of Putley, famed for its beautiful orchards and black and white houses. It tells of the families who lived here, rich and poor, over many generations and identifies their cottages, smallholdings and farms. It describes the changing patterns of farming - and yet the continuity of fruit production for cash income - throughout these many years.
The period encompasses many social changes. It starts at the time of the ox cart and Herefordshire’s notoriously bad roads, at the dawn of a scientific age. It ends with the internet age and global communications of the 21s . Putley, renowned for the Big Apple celebrations and Dragon Orchard cropsharers, approaches the 21st century with enterprise and hope.
